This was a personal project I worked on during my break to experiment with making and simulating clothes in Houdini. Both dresses in the scene were entirely created and simulated in Houdini, and since this was my first time making clothing in any 3D software, it took some trial and error to get the hang of it.
At first, I thought the simulation process wouldn't be too complex, but once I got past the modeling stage, I ran into a lot of troubleshooting—mainly with constraints and finding the right stiffness for different parts of the dress. Collision was another big challenge, especially with the character’s hands. The sharp geometry kept penetrating through the dress, but I couldn’t just use a simple sphere as a collision object since her hands moved so close to her hips. To fix this, I used a convex decomposition node to generate a rough hand shape and optimized it using time shift and point deform nodes to improve performance.
Even though there were plenty of challenges along the way, I really enjoyed the process and picked up a lot of useful techniques for working with cloth in Houdini.
